Why We Exist
Four county judges looked at their criminal dockets, looked at their budgets, and recognized the same problem: people were moving through the system without real representation, and it was costing everyone. Defendants, taxpayers, and communities. They decided to do something about it.
In 2024, Victoria, Jackson, Lavaca, and Refugio counties came together to build something this region had never had. A real defense operation. Not a wheel of rotating attorneys picking up appointments between other work. A dedicated office, staffed by people whose only job is to fight for the people who need it most. That office is Crossroads Defenders.

What We Do
We represent people who cannot afford a lawyer. That is the job, and we take it seriously. Our team includes attorneys, investigators, social workers, and support staff who work together on every case. We fight in court. We also work on housing, mental health, employment, and the underlying issues that brought someone to a courtroom in the first place. We do this not because it makes us feel good, but because it works. Good defense is good for the whole community. It keeps the system honest, protects the innocent, and holds the government to its burden. We serve four counties in South Texas and we are growing, because the need is real.

Where We Work
Our office sits in the historic McFaddin Building on Liberty Street in downtown Victoria. It is, without much competition, the nicest defender's office in Texas. Victoria County purchased the building and made it ours, which saved taxpayer money and gave us a home we are proud to show up to every morning.

Where We Are Headed
We are a young office. Brian Watson became our first Chief Defender in May 2024, and we have been building ever since. The goal is simple and ambitious at the same time: become the gold standard for holistic criminal defense in rural Texas, and prove that where you live should not determine the quality of your defense. We are not there yet. But we are on our way, and we know exactly where we are going.
